Does your health or fitness journey feel like a roller coaster ride? Good for a month, off a week, on a week, off for 2…. You aren’t alone. This seems to be the norm these days. But just because it is normal doesn’t mean that you can’t get off the roller coaster ride and make a permanent and lasting change in your life. And the best part is, that you don’t have to become a hardcore gym rat or fork over your entire salary to a trainer to do so. Just follow these 3 simple steps and you will be on your way to living a lifestyle that prioritizes your health.
Make it fun - You can buy the fanciest workout equipment, have the most elaborate program, and a full proof accountability plan in place but the truth is none of these will be enough to get you to do the work you need to do each day to live the healthy life that you desire after motivation runs out. So include things in your workouts that you look forward to. Here is the truth: I'd rather have my clients excited about their next workout that includes playing their favorite sport with some push ups and squats mixed in and blocking off their calendar for it than have them dread their perfectly programmed workout and looking for any excuse to get out of it.
Track your progress - Seeing the results of all the hard work you are putting in is a sure way to keep your motivation high and your discipline on point. Most people don’t keep track of their progress other than getting on the scale everyday and looking in the mirror. Neither of these will tell us what’s actually happening. You are your own biggest critic and also your worst cheerleader. Which means the mirror will be nothing more than an enemy and the scale while it can be helpful, most of the time it's abused. (read more on that here) So write everything down. Ideally turn it more into a journal than just a log. Track your sleep, your moods, your nutrition, your workouts, and goals. Take your measurements, get on the scale, and even re-test a workout once a month. Every 3 months take progress pictures. All of this information together will give you a clear picture of the progress you are making. And if the progress isn’t going as you’d like then at least you have the data that will help you to make the necessary changes.
Follow through - Consistency is key when it comes to most things especially your health. No one has ever or will ever improve their health long term, with one workout, or one healthy meal. It takes day after day, week after week, and month after month to truly make improvements that will last. So do whatever it takes to make exercise a part of your routine. The more routine it becomes the deeper ingrained the habit becomes. Once exercise becomes a habit it will be something that just happens and when it doesn’t, something that you crave. (see more about creating habits here) By making exercise a habit the consistency that you need to get results will be there.
